Selling Tickets at AHF on Beautiful Painting!

Every year the MSPHA usually has a raffle of some sort to help raise money for our ongoing efforts to rehoming the standardbreds. This year my good friend Jeff Roberts has generously taken the time to paint a picture for the purpose of selling tickets on to help the cause. This will be on display at the 6th annual Atlantic Horse Fair this year, but will be selling tickets on it up until that point. Tickets will be $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00.

Springtime Means Atlantic Horse Fair Time!

Shedding, mud, and longer days are all things that we as horse people look forward to with the prospect of spring! In Central NS the Atlantic Horse Fair is always a great way for us to kick-start our riding routine, do a bit of shipping, and take in some great clinics and demos. There is something for everyone to look forward to! For a change, the Horse Fair will be starting on Friday night, rather than the usual Saturday! Check out the link to the AHF website over the next couple of weeks for updates to guest speakers, clinicians and vendors. Also, the tentative date for live racing to return is Sunday April 21st!

Pedicures helping Pacers – MSPHA Thanks Local Vet Clinic!

MSPHA would like to thank Fundy Veterinarians Ltd for including us in their Nail Trim fundraiser. Proceeds from the nail trims offered in-clinic for cats and dogs are used to help support local animal rescue efforts for both small and large animals.

Dalhousie Agricultural Campus Invite Standardbreds to New Facility!

As many of you know, the Nova Scotia Agricultural College has recently gone through a merger with Dalhousie University. Now known as the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (still known as the “AC”), they offer a diploma in business management specializing in equine studies.

For the next 2 weeks, the DAC has invited 2 available standardbreds listed through the MSPHA to stay at their beautiful new facility to help the students gain a hands-on approach to equine health and care. Mandy (Mannart Wave Swept) and Mysti will spend the 2 weeks together gaining great socialization skills together and with the daily handling with students.

These mares are still available for adoption. If you or someone you know may be interested in offering one of these two great mares a home they can contact us at adoptables@mspha.ca for more details!

ADOPTION PENDING – “Rum Tuff Customer” aka “Tuffy”

Tuffy is now looking for the perfect home! He is a handsome black gelding with 2 small hind white socks. He is 7 years old, approx. 15.3-16 HH and very easy to work around. Tuffy has actually had a rider on him occasionally but has not officially been started to saddle. He has accepted a saddle and rider with no issues. He is best suited for light riding, occasional trails, or as a companion for another. Great to work around, crossties, pick up feet, brush, lead etc. Tuffy did not get along well with his pasturemate in his previous home so his potential new home would ideally have turnout options for him. He has been turned out in herd situations before with no other problems, and loves the mares he is currently being boarded with. We are thinking that it was a conflict of personalities between the 2 horses.

** UPDATE – March 3, 2013 – Tuffy was lunged at a walk and some trot work. He accepted a saddle and a rider at a walk with ease. Tuffy will continue his training until the perfect home is found for him.

Tuffy is located in Truro and available to an approved home only!

**Update March 3, 2013 – Mandy will be spending the next 2 weeks in the beautiful new facility on the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus. During this time she will be handled daily by students who are learning many aspects of equine health and care. This will be a great experience for both the horses and students and we look forward to the updates of Mandy during this time. Please note: Mandy is still available for adoption during this time, so please do not hesitate to inquire about this mare.

Mandy (Mannard Wave Swept) is an 11-year old mare searching for a loving home. She is blind in one eye but that doesn’t bother her at all. She loves to run and play, bet attention and munch on carrots. Mandy is completely sound, just not fast enough to race.

Mandy needs to be adopted by someone with horse experience as she is quite an energetic horse.

Mandy is located in Truro and is available to an approved home only.

Bolt is a handsome 19 month old standardbred colt looking for a new home. He is a stocky boy and should mature about 15.2hh. Bay with a star this boy will make a lovely blank canvas for whatever your discipline is. Has no lameness issues, he just never made it through the process for becoming a racehorse.

Bolt is intact and will need to be gelded upon moving to his new home. Located just outside of Truro, NS.

ADOPTED THROUGH MSA – “Casimir Eclipse” aka “Lily”

Lily is a pretty, 10 year old bay mare looking for a loving and gentle home. She’s approx 14’3 – 15hh and raced until she was 5 but wasn’t overly competitive so her owners decided to retire her. Her owners then sent her to a riding stable where she excelled as a lesson and trail horse for about 3 years. She has been ridden English and Western and was leased by a young girl for a year who even jumped her She walks, trots and canters (she has a pretty bouncy trot). Her owner has never seen her pace under saddle. Also, part of her training as a race horse was on dirt roads in the country so she could be a lot of fun in harness too!

Lily has not been ridden for about 2 years but her owners do not think it would take much to get her going again. She’s very easy to work with and does well living outside with other horses or stabled with lots of turnout. She maintains a good condition on lots of hay and very little grain if any. She’s sound, in excellent health and hasn’t worn shoes since she raced. Can be a little fussy about getting her halter put on and a little nervous with a new farrier but once you gain her trust she is fine. Trailers well and is very good for the vet. Located outside of New Glasgow.

2012 NSPE Select Yearling Sale

Another year, another sale. This year the 2012 Select Yearling Sale is being held on Friday, October 19th at the Agridome in Truro. Some of the top yearlings in the Maritimes will be available for auction starting at 6:30pm. If you are looking for your next winner you may find them here!

“One of the yearlings sold last year, The Rev (previously Win Storm Dancer), is currently one of the top two-year-old colts in Atlantic Canada- with three wins and four second place finishes out of eight starts and more than $14,000 in earnings.

One of the fillies from the 2010 sale, Seeyouonthebeach, is currently one of the top three-year-old fillies. Veteran horseman Hollis White has had a very successful season with his purchase from that year- Miss Miss Miss Fit.

Autumn Gottem is another success story from the 2010 sale, with five wins in six starts- the last two in Mohawk, and a mark of 1:51.3″ – Truro Raceway Website

ADOPTED BY MSPHA – “Soul Chaser” aka “Souley”

Souley is a handsome, 11 year old gelding looking to find a great new home! Souley has had a very successful race career to date, and it is time for a slower pace away from the track. He is approx. 16hh, dark bay with no white markings on his face, but has 4 white socks…very flashy! When approaching him in his stall he will put his ears back, but he is easy to work around and has no dirt. He has been turned out with other horses off of track grounds and got along with them great.

Souley is being retied as he does have an injury to his ankle that should not be pushed any more with the strains of racing. His current owners feel that with a little bit of time off and some time to just be a horse, he would be great as a flat riding horse or for trails (no jumping).
